About the Parish

When, in 1901, the religious orders in France were persecuted, Cardinal Vaughan, then Archbishop of Westminster, expressed the desire that the Assumptionists (Augustinians of the Assumption) would establish themselves in his diocese. Fr. Picard decided that his sons should inaugurate their work in the poorer parish. It was that the first Assumptionists mission was opened in Bethnal Green – London in 1901.

  • 1899: the Assumptionists first came to the UK.
  • 1901: began their first work in London with the help from Little Sisters of the Assumption established at 111 Bow road.
  • Mrs. Florence COTRELL DORME and Mr. Clement COTRELL DORME helped to build a new church in Bethnal Green. The architect was Mr. Edward GOLDIE
  • 1911 November 6th: the foundation stone was laid by Cardinal Bourne
  • 1912 June 22nd: the first Mass was celebrated by the Superior General of the Assumptionists, Fr Emmanuel BAILLY in the presence of Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster.
  • 1962 June: the consecration of the church by His Eminence, Cardinal Godfrey and his Lordship Bishop Craven, assisted by Monsignor Gordon Wheeler, Monsignor Stephen Shaw, and Assumptionists Superior General, Fr Wilfrid Dufault.
