Planned giving campaign week 1

Saint Mary’s, as you know, was built by a poor migrant Priest from Normandy in 1816. He managed to raise the £1,145 it cost to build thanks to the generosity of many benefactors. We are the beneficiaries of their generosity. If the church is in such good condition after 200 years, it is because others have also given generously.

I believe we too have a duty of care towards this gem to preserve it for future generations. A church is a reflection of the faith, mission and outreach of those who worship in it. The building is a powerhouse of pastoral care, Sacramental nurturing and a beacon of Catholic faith in a very secular society.

In my 18 years as Parish Priest, we have had two planned giving campaigns. They are designed to kindle in our community a sense of responsibility for the financial support of our Parish. We all need a gentle reminder that we are part of the bricks and mortar of the Parish and if we value it, then we must support it. The best and most efficient way to do that is by giving regularly, realistically and using the tools that the modern world gives us like standing orders, gift aiding and contactless cash payments. Most Priests dislike talking about money and I am fully aware that many of you already donate very generously.

This campaign is asking you to think about how and what you give and to ask yourselves ‘can I help my Parish to carry out its core function of preaching the Gospel of Christ?’ Our mission drives the appropriate use of our resources not the other way round. We have a very impressive Finance Committee which will lead the planned giving campaign. I ask you to listen to what is said and do your bit. In 200 years there be other generations who will be eternally grateful to you.
