The Catholic Women’s League is an international organisation founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher.

The aim of the CWL is to unite all Catholic women in a bond of common fellowship.

Its objectives are to …

  • Promote and support charitable works on parish, diocesan and national levels.
  • Train and encourage members to use their talents and skills in the service of the Church and community.
  • Initiate and maintain charitable works, whether religious or educational or in the interests of moral and social welfare.

The Boxmoor CWL was founded forty years ago in 1974. We are a friendly and sociable group which undertakes charitable works and always welcomes new members. Those wanting to find out more about us are always welcome to join one of our meetings.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month in St Joseph’s Hall at 7.45pm.

At our meetings we often have speakers who are able to give us an insight into their work for the good of others or teach us new skills.

June 2016: The Boxmoor Section has had a busy few months.   At the April meeting, Eileen (a Boxmoor CWL member) gave a very interesting flower demonstration to the group on how to make a variety of flower arrangements using supermarket flowers.  The arrangements were both contemporary and traditional – all were easy to do!  During the demonstration Eileen gave tips on how to condition the flowers, what types of flowers to use, and chatted to the members as she arranged the flowers.  The four arrangements were raffled at the end of the meeting. Members said they really enjoyed the evening and were inspired to create their own arrangements at home.

The section also held a very successful National Coffee Morning.  Members and parishioners came after the two morning masses to eat the delicious cakes and pastries provided for the event.  Everyone from the Parish was invited and, as well as raising the profile of the CWL in Boxmoor, we raised £156.50 for the local women’s refuge.

At our May meeting we had a ‘film night’.  After the business was discussed, the members and parishioners settled down to a showing of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  Everyone had a really nice time, laughed a lot and are eagerly awaiting the next film night which is planned for the autumn.

On Friday 13 May Boxmoor and Adeyfield sections held a joint prayer service a World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) prayer service at St Mary and St Joseph’s Church.  This was attended by members and parishioners, women and men. This was a truly uplifting experience, and an excellent opportunity to experience a real sense of “spiritual fellowship” with everyone who attended the service as well as join in the Pope’s prayers for mercy.

On the last Thursday of each month (excluding January and August) we have ‘soup specials’ where we provide homemade soup, tea/coffee and cake and raise money for different charities.  These are always very popular with the parishioners and the residents of Boxmoor, where not only do they enjoy the soup and cake but also experience great companionship.

Our group has flourished and we have a lot of fun and fellowship.  We look forward to more parishioners joining us as we plan continued involvement in the parish and local community.

Details of all our meetings and events will be in the Parish Newsletter.
