The Catholic Women’s League is an international organisation founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher.
The aim of the CWL is to unite all Catholic women in a bond of common fellowship.
Its objectives are to …
- Promote and support charitable works on parish, diocesan and national levels.
- Train and encourage members to use their talents and skills in the service of the Church and community.
- Initiate and maintain charitable works, whether religious or educational or in the interests of moral and social welfare.
The Boxmoor CWL was founded over forty years ago in 1974. We are a friendly and sociable group which undertakes charitable works and always welcomes new members. Those wanting to find out more about us are always welcome to join one of our meetings.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month in St Joseph’s Hall at 7.45pm.
On the last Thursday of each month (excluding January and August) we have ‘soup specials’ where we provide homemade soup, tea/coffee and cake and raise money for different charities. These are always very popular with the parishioners and the residents of Boxmoor, where not only do they enjoy the soup and cake but also experience great companionship.
At our meetings we often have speakers who are able to give us an insight into their work for the good of others or teach us new skills.
Our Religious activities:
June: we followed the Lampedusa Pilgrimage in the Church grounds
July: some members went to the Branch retreat at Nilands Centre, Bushey
December: Chairman Jane Gonzalez led an Advent Reflection
Speakers this year were:
February: Emily Rae, Maxwell Dacorum Council, on the housing of Syrian Refugees in Dacorum
May: Fr Bernard on HCPT Charity which organises pilgrimages to Lourdes
July: Ken and June Brazier on the work of Mercy ships
November: Kerry Anne Cooper at the Liberty Tea Rooms
Our Social meetings:
April: we held an Agape Bring and Share Supper
June: a Visit to the Paper Trail, Apsley
September: a Bring and Share Supper
December: some members went for a Christmas Meal at I Love Food, Berkhamsted
Fundraising and Donations
We have raised money by having:
Soup Specials monthly, a Harvest Tea in September, a Christmas Fair in November and a Festive Hamper Raffle in December.
We donated presents for the Christmas boxes under the Operation Christmas Child scheme.
Our group has flourished and we have a lot of fun and fellowship. We look forward to more parishioners joining us as we plan continued involvement in the parish and local community.
Details of all our meetings and events will be in the Parish Newsletter.
