Message from Fr John

As you are no doubt aware I was in hospital over the Easter period with a very severe lung infection. Thankfully all has gone well with my treatment, and I am feeling very well, but I need quite a long recovery period before I can immerse myself in work again, so the earliest I am likely to return will be early May, and then only ‘part time’.

I would like to thank all of you who have prayed for me and sent cards and good wishes, and to Fr Jim and all the parishioners who rose to the challenge of ensuring that the Easter Liturgies were performed competently and prayerfully, especially the choir and servers, the sacristans and those of you who have helped to ensure that the life of the parish continues.

Our candidates for Confirmation will continue their preparation for the Sacrament at St Dominic’s and Bishop Hudson will confirm them, at St Dominic’s, on Sunday 30th June at 10am.

The First communion programme will soon be drawing to a close. I very much hope and look forward to being able to celebrate the Masses at which our children will be receiving Holy Communion for the first time. If any parents have not yet arranged a date and time and would like to do so, please contact Liliana by email – kentishtown@rcdow.org.uk I hope that Masses will begin on Sunday 19th May. Parents may choose any Sunday Mass (including Saturday evening) after that date, but it is our practice that only two families may join any particular Mass.

Once again thank you to everyone, and I look forward to being back with you before too long.

Fr John

Good Shephard Sunday (21 April 2024)

There will be a special collection to support the education and formation of our Diocesan seminarians. Your donation to the Priest Training Fund will support the work of the Vocations Team, so they can encourage and inspire those who hear God’s calling. Your donations will also support the seminary fees and living costs of our seminarians and those in formation for the diaconate.

Below a letter from Bishop John Sherrington:

Annual Collection for the Priests Training Fund
Saturday 20 April and Sunday 21 April 2024

On the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday, we will pray for vocations to the priesthood, as well as for our seminarians at the Royal English College in Valladolid, Allen Hall, and the Beda College. Please also pray for the priests of our Diocese. I am also writing to ask for your help in supporting the Priests Training Fund with the annual appeal which takes place on Saturday 20 April and Sunday 21 April.

Good Shepherd Sunday provides an opportunity to talk about the life of the priest and invite men to consider this wonderful and grace-filled vocation. I encourage you to share something of the joy and fruits of your priestly ministry or something about the discovery of a call from God to be a priest. We hope that the Holy Spirit will stir the hearts of other men to discern further a vocation to the priesthood. At a meeting of seekers earlier in the year, many were pleased to reflect on the mission of the Church and the importance of the priests whom they know. As we continue to reflect in our parishes on the mission of the Church, it was good to hear at the recent Council of Deans’ meeting about the richness of prayer, sacramental life, and many charitable works in the diocese.

Canon Roger Taylor continues to promote vocations to the priesthood. There are monthly Seekers’ meetings, ‘Come and See’ days to be held in Potters Bar on 20 th April and 1 st June in Harpenden. He wishes to meet with deaneries, in parishes, with youth and adult groups and is welcoming invitations to visit schools. He is also very happy to come and meet interested individuals throughout the Diocese.

This year, we have 49 men studying at Allen Hall, of whom 13 are from our own Diocese. We also have one seminarian in Valladolid and one at the Beda, presently on pastoral placement in Ruislip. There are also two on a propaedeutic year at Redemptoris Mater. Last year, 3 Deacons were ordained for Westminster Diocese. We look forward to ordinations this summer.  The cost of the formation of the Westminster seminarians will have been borne by the Priest Training Fund.

In difficult financial circumstances, please thank those who contribute, especially on a regular basis, to this collection. The materials will be distributed by the Fundraising department in the usual way. I thank you in advance for making these available to your parishioners in support of this important fund.

Be assured of my prayers.
With every good wish,

Bishop John Sherrington
Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster
