Letchworth Foodbank opened in 2012. It operates in 3 locations – Letchworth, Baldock and Hitchin.
“We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.”
It works with a range of local agencies such as local churches, Citizens Advice, health services, social services, and childrens’ centres (to name but a few) who can refer individuals or families to the foodbank who can receive help normally via a foodbank voucher system.
While its main focus is to ensure no-one goes hungry and will provide an emergency food parcel for 3 days, the Foodbank volunteers are available to help with practical advice and knowledge about local services.
The Foodbank relies on the goodwill and support from the community for:
- Donations of food – according to the Trussell Trust, 90% of food distributed through the Foodbank network is donated by the public. Donation locations are available through this link.
- Volunteers both at the Warehouse and in the Foodbank locations
