THE VIEW FROM THE PRESBYTERY

The Jubilee Weekend seemed to go very well and I hope you all managed a bit of a break. There seemed to be lots of activities and parties organised in the Hertford area, so I trust that people were able to participate in what they wanted to do. It was certainly a memorable moment when we found out what the Queen carries in her handbag…who would have thought it would be a marmalade sandwich! It was certainly good to see so many at the Jubilee drinks after the 10.30 Mass. About 40 people were present and a good time was had by all. I would just hope that people would come to the refreshments we normally offer on Sunday mornings. It’s always better with a decent crowd.

On a sadder note, please keep praying for the family of the boy who was fatally stabbed recently in Stevenage after he had attended the School Prom at St John Henry Newman School. His name was Kajetan Migdal – may he rest in peace.

This weekend, we celebrate the First Holy Communion of 42 children who have prepared for this moment since last September. They have been a good group, who have worked hard to get themselves ready for this important sacrament. Keep them in your prayers, but please try and avoid the 10.30 Mass next Sunday, as it will be very full. I also need to say that there will be no Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament this Saturday (11 June) because of the First Holy Communion Mass at 2.30. There just would not be time to get it ready. I apologise for that, but hope that you understand.

Next weekend we celebrate Corpus Christi, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This is always an important moment in the life of the parish and we shall begin the Saturday Adoration at 4pm rather than 5pm. We shall also have Adoration on Sunday afternoon from 2.30 until 5. This adoration will have to take the place of the Blessed Sacrament Procession which we usually have on this day. I am reluctant to cancel the procession, but I don’t know for certain that we shall have enough people to do the jobs required and because of the uncertainty we have not primed the First Communion children to attend and lead the procession. Perhaps we can see it as a consequence of the Covid period and look forward to doing it fully again next year.

We have returned to Ordinary Time for the liturgy and in the past week we had the green vestments out once more. However, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity will be our focus this weekend, along with First Communion.

As always, keep smiling, keep safe and keep going. And, for now, keep wearing the masks and using the sanitisers.

God blessFr Terry

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WARNING AS RESIDENTS RECEIVE SCAM POLICE CALLS: The scams usually start with a phone call.  The caller claims to be a police officer and tells you there is fraudulent activity on your bank account. You are then asked to put their bank cards and/or money into an envelope and give them to a courier or taxi driver, who is sent to your home by the caller. In some cases, victims are asked to buy goods or vouchers.

The phoney police officer may also ask for your bank details, such as your account and PIN numbers, as part of their “investigation”. This is a scam. If you receive an unexpected call, you should be suspicious. It is vital to remember that your bank and the police would:

NEVER ask for your bank account details or PIN number over the phone.  Do not disclose these to anyone, no matter who they claim to be. NEVER ask you to withdraw money or purchase items and send it to them via a courier or by any other means. NEVER ask you to send your bank cards or any other personal property via courier or by any other means. If you are suspicious of a caller, please end the call. Remember, when reporting a suspicious phone call to police, use another phone or test your line first by phoning a friend or relative, to ensure you aren’t still unwittingly connected to the fraudster. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress call 999. If you have concerns about your bank account, visit your local branch. Some phone companies offer call screening services to help block marketing cold calls and bogus callers. Contact your phone company and ask about call screening and caller display services.
