THE VIEW FROM THE PRESBYTERY

Well – I have landed! The move on Wednesday went very smoothly from my former home in Angel, Islington. Of course, the steamy tropical-like weather has made some of the unpacking and settling in that little bit more tiring, but I should not complain!

I am delighted to be here as your Parish Priest and look forward very much to getting to know you and serve you as best as I can. However, it is slightly bittersweet having to take over from Canon Terry Phipps whom I have known for fifty-five years and consider a good friend. We were at the same Secondary School together – though he is much older than I (!) – I was a First Year and a Treble in the School Choir when Canon Terry was preparing to sit the entrance exam for Oxford and was already a star Tenor! We were to meet years later when I was a few years his senior in the Venerable English College in Rome where we both trained for ministry. He sang the Responsorial Psalm at my Ordination forty-two years ago in Kilburn, and I was present at his Ordination in Harrow-on-the-Hill forty years ago. I know his having to retire through ill-heath is devastating for him – and assure him of my prayers and very best wishes for the future. I hope we will be able to have him back and celebrate his fortieth in style as soon as he is more mobile! Please keep him and me in your prayers as we begin new chapters in our lives as priests.

May the Good Lord bless us all!

Fr Séamus
