THE VIEW FROM THE PRESBYTERY

For the first time in a long time we have green vestments on a Sunday, as we celebrate the Ordinary Time of the Church’s liturgical year. This weekend marks the Thirteenth Sunday in this Ordinary Time and we return to our semi-continuous reading of the Gospel of St Luke in Year C of the Sunday Lectionary cycle. We still have a few Feasts to get through, though. Next Wednesday, 29 June we have the Feast of St Peter and Paul, which is a Holyday of Obligation in England and Wales. We shall have two masses in the church (at 7.30am and 8.00pm) and one at St Joseph’s School, at which parents and parishioners are welcome. The Mass will take place at 10.00am. As I mentioned in the newsletter last week, there will be a retiring collection at all masses this weekend for Peter’s Pence, which is our contribution to the work of the Holy See. Do give what you can.

Next Friday, 1 July, is the Feast of the Dedication of our Cathedral in Westminster. Even if you can’t make the Mass, please remember to say a prayer for our Archbishop, Cardinal Nichols, our diocese and our Cathedral.

I need to alert you to the fact that I shall be away from 8-11 July. I have been asked by a French couple whose wedding I celebrated 30 years ago, to come to Lyons to say a Mass for their anniversary. Fr Michael Doyle has kindly agreed to say the Masses here on the Saturday and Sunday, but there will be no confessions or adoration of the Blessed Sacrament that weekend. The Masses on Friday 8/7 and Monday 11/7 will also be cancelled. I am sorry for any inconvenience, but I am sure you will understand. I shall give details  of when I shall be away for my summer break slightly nearer the time. I also have to do two weddings outside the parish, one in July and one in August, and I will give details of those soon.

As I noted last weekend, we are beginning to get news of the World Youth Day, which will take place in Portugal in 2023. There is a first notice on the reverse side of this newsletter and there will be a group representing the Diocese of Westminster, which people can join. We should have further details very shortly, but I just wanted to alert you to this event.

Photographs of this year’s First Communion have now arrived and can be found on the chest at the back of the church. Envelopes are available and details of your choices can be written on them and cash enclosed. Alternatively, you can use the QR code on the envelope to see the photographs online and also find details of payment. The children look marvellous!

God bless –  Fr Terry
