THE VIEW FROM THE PRESBYTERY

The Summer Solstice and the Midsummer Festival didn’t bring us much good weather last week and it doesn’t look too promising for the coming week either. However, I am sure we shall manage, whatever the weather, so we just have to grin and bear it. On Tuesday we shall celebrate the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, and since this is normally a Holyday of Obligation we shall have Masses in church on Tuesday at 10am and 8pm. There will also be a Mass at the school, but Covid restrictions sadly mean that we cannot invite any parishioners this year.

On Thursday, we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the Cathedral and although the church is closed on Thursdays, please try to remember to say a prayer for the work of the Cathedral and the Diocese. At this time of the year, to coincide with the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul, we always have a retiring collection for Peter’s Pence, which is our contribution to the work of the Holy See in all its varied works and ministries. Do please give what you can next weekend and let us be in solidarity with the whole Church throughout the world, as we contribute to the good working of the Church in Rome and elsewhere.

On another matter, during the last eighteen months or so, for perfectly understandable reasons, we have seen a reduction in the number of volunteers in several areas of parish life. We are now in real need of people to count the Sunday collection; we could do with a few more who might be willing to clean the church and there are always opportunities for people to join the rota for flower arranging. These are not onerous jobs, but they are vital for the smooth running of the parish. Perhaps you might consider whether you might be able to help. Once you have decided, then please give me your name and contact details so that we can get things moving again, probably in September.

Another opportunity for volunteering presents itself at St Joseph’s School. We are particularly short of school governors at the moment, and since this is a Catholic school, under the supervision of the Diocese of Westminster, we are very short of what are called Foundation Governors who are appointed by the diocese. If anyone has an inclination to be part of the team of governors who are so important to the running of the school, please mention it to me and I can put you in touch with someone who can give you a fuller idea of what is involved. Our school has an important place in our Parish Community. It needs some support to keep its high standards and its Catholic ethos, and you might be just the person to help it do so.

As always: keep safe; keep smiling; keep going!

God Bless  – Fr Terry

The Beauty of Marriage
Let us pray for young people who are preparing for marriage with the support of a Christian community: may they grow in love, with generosity, faithfulness and patience.

IF YOU GO IN TO HOSPITAL: Catholics in hospital are unlikely to receive an automatic visit from the Catholic Chaplain. If someone is sick in hospital, please let us know here at the Presbytery, and/or ask the staff on the ward, so that your loved one can be visited whilst in hospital, and receive Holy Communion and any other Sacraments from the Chaplain.
