THE VIEW FROM THE PRESBYTERY

We are now fully into August and are consequently in that period of the year when nothing much seems to be happening. A number of people will be away, of course, and although we shall get some visitors to the parish, we shall probably be down in numbers for the next few weeks. We have had quite a number of baptisms, however, so there are still people joining the parish.

There have also been a few deaths and we have sent some people on their journey to God with hope and prayer in our hearts. Paul Rutland-Barsby’s funeral will take place next Wednesday, 11 August at 11.30. Paul was a very active member of our parish for many years. He was a member of the choir and the parish’s Cafod representative and he worked hard in so many areas. The family would ask that because of difficulties connected with Covid only those who are invited should attend the Funeral Mass. However, the ceremony will be live streamed and you can find the details of how to access and view the live stream on the back of this newsletter. You will also find details of how to find Paul’s Just Giving Page, if you wish to make a donation in his memory. The chosen charity is Cafod.

Another parishioner who has passed away is Norah Hilditch, but the particular sadness there is that her only daughter Irene has also just passed away as I write this. Please keep them in your prayers; the only family Norah and Irene had are all in Kenya.

On another subject, I would like to thank Elizabeth Black and Daniel Fajardo, who have agreed to become Parish Safeguarding Representatives. Their job will be to keep up the official paperwork for the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) forms, which are necessary for any volunteers who work with children or vulnerable adults and also to be available to anyone who has concerns about any problems connected with safeguarding. We want to make sure that everyone in the parish is safe.

I want also to thank Joan Chadirchi, who has been our Parish Safeguarding Representative for several years and has done a marvellous job despite all the recent Covid restrictions. We are very much in her debt.

We shall continue with the current practice at Mass until the first weekend in September. Please sanitise your hands at the door of the church; keep to the one-way system for Holy Communion; wear a mask inside the church, unless you are exempt. Let’s hope and pray that current improvements will continue and that the vaccination process will continue to bring down infections and help us return to some normality. I am looking forward to being away from 16/8 until 2/9. Fr Michael Doyle visited this week and is also looking forward to supplying in Hertford during my absence. Please give him a good welcome, and remember that next Sunday is the Feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Lady. A great Feast! As always: keep safe; keep smiling; keep going! Happy holidays!

God Bless – Fr Terry
