Newsletter 10 April 22

For the times of Mass and Services from 10th April to 24th April, please see the Holy Week and Easter Card

The Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday) are the three days leading up to Jesus’ Resurrection. We would love to see you at all of our Triduum liturgies, especially if you’ve never attended in the past! Come join us.

Maundy Thursday:  I invite you join us for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 8.00pm, as we recount the story of the Last Supper and conclude with a Eucharistic procession to what is called the altar of repose where you can come and pray until midnight. Also during the Mass, we will have the washing of the feet. No, you don’t have to have your feet washed…but you will be able to witness this unique tradition as the clergy mirror the act of servant leadership Jesus performed for his disciples at the Last Supper.

Good Friday: Is the day we remember Christ’s crucifixion and commemorate the unimaginable love poured out for us on the Cross. We invite you and your family to join us for our various services today.

Stations of the Cross for families at 10.00am

Solemn Liturgy of the Passion at 3.00pm

Stations of the Cross at 7.00pm

Easter Vigil: On Holy Saturday begins at 8.30pm with the blessing of the fire and lighting of the Easter Candle. During this Mass we are all invited to renew the promises of our Baptism. Come and join us as we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection.

I look forward to serving you at the Triduum!

Fr Perry

Please see the Holy Week and Easter Leaflet with all the times of Masses and Services.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION

Certainly many words describe the traumatic suffering and dying of the One whom the we call “Lord.”   It may be too much for us to comprehend.  It proved too much for the disciples to take in.  If we really move into the event, the climax of Jesus’ life overwhelms us.  Suffering is overwhelming for us.  It is jolting to meet something so phenomenal around which we cannot manoeuvre.  We experience helplessness.  Somehow, though, we must dwell within it, stand in awe of it, and pray through it.

In times of suffering, we return to an awareness of our own human frailty.  It is a place of humility, recognising God as Creator and ourselves as finite creatures within the larger reality.  We, like the disciples, experience our limits.  We are not in ultimate control.  That is God’s domain.  So, too, is the reason for suffering and the miracle of Resurrection in God’s domain.

Holy Week is a week of suffering.  The Passion of our Lord is suffering that connects him with us in our humanity in a very definitive way.  Suffering can be a meeting place between God and ourselves.  In suffering we grow in solidarity with Christ and with those he loves.  His suffering is an icon of our own suffering, a window of opportunity that points us to our Creator. God, who is infinite, reaches out in staggering humility to touch us in that pain.  God, who took on human flesh, dies at the hands of those whom he came to enlighten.  Accepting the humiliation, the betrayal, and the smallness of human minds, Jesus lives out his last days at the mercy of the merciless.

During Holy Week, our hearts join with Christ in his Passion and we walk humbly with those who presently suffer.  We breathe with them in the knowledge that we are one in this human existence, honouring this common bond in wonder, empathy, and respect.  As we recall this most precious event within the Christian tradition, we are called to enter more deeply into the reality of pain and persecution in our world.  We also know the profound promise of a light that will not be overcome by deep shadows.  Again, at this time in history, let us promise to live in that light so that sin and injustice will be overcome.

BAPTISMS –  Please contact Fr Perry to arrange dates for baptism.

MASS INTENTIONS – We are now booking Masses for the month of May.   Please note that if you ask for an intention on a specific date and a funeral is subsequently arranged on that day, the intention will be moved to the next available date.  We are able to send Masses to Fr Henry in Malawi.

SMARTIE TUBES – Please return your Smartie Tubes on Easter Sunday – they can be placed in the basket by the repository stall.

PARISH NOVENA – Please note that just for this year our Parish Novena to Our lady of Perpetual Help will be from 8th to 17th May 2022.  (Our Parish Walking Pilgrimage takes place from 11th – 20th June).

ELIZABETH JANE FLANAGAN RIP – We pray for the repose of the soul of Elizabeth Flanagan who died recently.  We offer our condolences and prayers to her family at this time.  Her Requiem Mass will take place on Monday 9th May at 9:30am.  May she rest in peace.
