Last Thursday, 21st November, Pope Francis published a Letter on the importance of the study of Church history. You may think that he was writing to seminarians or priests…
No, Church history is your history, we are the Church.
When we study the history of the Church, we find a lot of imperfection and wounds, like all of us, but also hope. We also encounter crisis, persecutions, enemies and a response made of love, forgiveness, martyrdom. Above all we find that ‘history’ is more than chronological facts and events. Church history and our history has a King, it is ruled by God; it is holy because it is led by the Holy Spirit; it has a centre, Jesus Christ, the source and the destination of the history of every man and woman.
Today’s Solemnity of Christ Universal King is about the history of the whole universe and the truth about it: Man and God reconciled in the Face of Christ.
