Fr Cyril Chiaha Writes:

The Feast of the Holy Trinity calls to mind the endless love and relationship in the Triune God. It is a feast that is more than a concept or doctrine, as it informs us of the composition of love dwelling in the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; each dwelling in the other by virtue of an unceasing movement of mutual love.

The background to the thinking about the Triune God is much more of a Scriptural experience even though its doctrinal formulation emerged from the Ecumenical Councils of the first four centuries.

The Old Testament provides the understanding that God reveals Himself progressively under different names to His people. The New Testament is also replete with the threefold experience of the personal God, whose love cannot be contained; whose love flows beyond the Triune life.

This understanding of God’s love reaching out is much expressed not only in the creation of all things, but also in the incarnation, as well as, in Jesus’ invitation to all to participate in God’s life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3.16).

Today’s feast invites us to participate in God’s life, to live a life of love, vulnerability, openness to another, selfless-giving, and participating in the life of the other in a way that the other is considered in one’s own scheme of affairs. Unfortunately, some people in the world neither recognise nor reward this kind of life.

As we mark this feast, may we remind ourselves that one is most authentically one’s self when we participate in the divine life, as it is the truest pattern of whom we are and how we are to live. May we also pray for the rekindling of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as without God’s Spirit each of us will be unable to produce fruitful lives that reflect the desires of God. Have a blessed week!
