NEWSLETTER: 27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – 8th OCTOBER 2023

Fr Andrew writes…

You may be aware of the Synod taking place in Rome at the moment. Pope Francis has called this Synod which brings together representatives from all aspects of the Church’s life and all states of life within it to explore the themes of Communion, Participation and Mission. The Synod Office in Rome has released the following prayer for the Holy Spirit to guide those participating in the Synod. This is an adaptation of the prayer which was recited before every session of the Second Vatican Council. Even though we may not be physically present, praying this prayer for those in Rome at this time is a great way for us to take part and unite ourselves with them.

“We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our   actions.
Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life
and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.
All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son,
forever and ever. Amen.”

NEIGHBOURS IN POPLAR

VISIT TO CALAIS NIP Group had a very satisfying day in Calais on Thursday. We delivered lots of donations from parishioners in both our parishes and met some fantastic young volunteers working with Refugees. One young Doctor from Bristol described her week so far: she and her team had treated 900 sick men and women in the pop up clinics across Calais and Dunkirk (just this week!!) She asked us for some basic items and we are doing a list of donations needed by the small Refuges across the city. Obviously with winter on the way, warm clothes for both men and women are a priority and, as you can imagine, small to medium sizes!! No one we met looked overfed! We hope to travel again in November and it would be great if we had the items most needed.
LADIES WARM CLOTHES needed soon for a Refuge. Most of the residents have fled domestic violence with just the clothes on their backs and need some woollies now that winter is on its way. One young pregnant woman this week came with no shoes! Sizes 5 and 6 most needed. No one is on the large side!
BOW FOOD BANK This is the largest Food Bank in the Borough and is now situated in Raines Foundation School in Bethnal Green. Open Mondays 8am to 12.30pm and Wednesdays 2pm to 7pm. See poster in the porch. Advice and   other help also given.
STAND UP TO RACISM Copies of United Eastend and Tower Hamlets Stand Up To Racism letters are available at the back of Church.
DINNERS continue to be cooked and delivered to our isolated elders across the Borough every Wednesday and Sunday. We always need help, peeling, preparing vegetables and delivering the dinners. All from St Matthias Community Centre. Alex, our Parish Administrator, can provide further information.
