St Vincent de Paul Society

The St Patrick Wapping St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Society Conference was set up in late 2023, to provide practical support to local residents in need. We operate under the umbrella of the SVP England & Wales (Registered charity number 1053992).

The SVP is an international network of Catholic charities, the aim of which is to provide practical support to those in need or those who are isolated, regardless of faith or circumstances. The first SVP Conference was set up in 1833 by a student in Paris, Blessed Frederic Ozanam. The Church was heavily criticised at the time for not doing enough for the poor – Ozanam persuaded his friends to get together and turn their faith into action. With the help of Sister Rosalie Rendu, a Daughter of Charity (a religious order founded by St Vincent de Paul and St Louise de Marillac in 1633) , they set up the first SVP Conference to bring material assistance and listen to the needs of those living in poverty in their local community. The first SVP Conference in England was set up only a few years later, in 1844, in London. Today, there are around 800,000 SVP members (i.e. volunteers) in some 140 countries worldwide, of which over 9,000 are in England and Wales.

The Wapping SVP carries out regular visits to local residents, parishioners or not, who may suffer from loneliness or may need practical or financial assistance. The volunteers also help parishioners who are otherwise housebound come to church to attend Mass in person. In addition, the group delivers freshly cooked, hot meals, which are prepared by local charity, Neighbours in Poplar, to beneficiaries in Wapping and Shadwell.
