Guidance and Requirements for the Burial of Cremated Remains

“In the section Commemorative events to celebrate the life of a person who has died, please note that the Catholic Church requires the burial of ashes and does not permit the scattering of ashes. This interment of ashes is limited to six people.

From the Diocese of Westminster, Guidance and Requirements for the Burial of Cremated Remains following the CDF Instruction dated 25 October 2016:

… after cremation “the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority.” (n. 5) It is also says that “the conservation of ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted” and that “ashes may not be divided among various family members.” (n. 6) Furthermore, the Instruction insists that “it is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea, or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewellery or other objects.” (n. 7)”
