Receiving First Holy Communion is one of the most special moments in a child’s Catholic life — the first time they receive the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. It is a milestone we celebrate together as a parish family, and one we prepare for with great care and joy.
Who is the programme for?
Our First Holy Communion programme is open to children in Year 3 or above. It is a parish-based programme that recognises the central role parents play in nurturing their child’s faith — the sessions are as much for families as they are for the children themselves.
What does the programme involve?
The programme runs from October through to May, with First Holy Communion Masses taking place in May and June.
A team of dedicated and experienced catechists leads the sessions, which combine group classes with activities for children to explore at home. The programme helps each child to understand — in their own way and at their own pace — the mystery and the gift of the Eucharist.
As part of their preparation, children also make their first Reconciliation (Confession) before receiving Holy Communion for the first time. This is a natural and beautiful part of the journey — a moment to experience God’s forgiveness and arrive at the altar with an open and joyful heart. You can find out more about Reconciliation on our Reconciliation page.
How to register
Registration opens each autumn. Look out for an announcement in the parish newsletter or speak to the parish office.
To register your child, please contact the parish office at acton@rcdow.org.uk or call 020 8992 2014.
A note on cost: Parents are asked to purchase a workbook at registration, which is used throughout the preparation classes. There is no charge to receive the sacrament itself.
On the day
First Holy Communion Masses take place in May and June and are a wonderful celebration for the whole family. The Going Forth Mass takes place the following Sunday at the 10.30am Mass, where children are presented with their First Holy Communion Certificate and welcomed by the whole parish community.
