Summer Camp 2024

16 young people from our parish went to the Kenelm Youth Trust summer camp at Alton Castle in July!
Reflections from the week will show here soon but for now here are some pictures of the fun:

Sponsored Sleepout

In May, 15 young people from the youth club embarked on a sponsored sleepout to raise money for the local homeless shelter – Olympic house.

‘I thought that the sleepout was a good life lesson because we had to learn what a homeless person lives every day. We only had to do it for one night so for them it would be much worse.’ Tommy

‘I went to the sleepout this year and I am very glad I did. This is because it allowed me to have time to reflect on how hard it is for those who are homeless. It was a compassionate activity that I would certainly do again.’ Keira

Staff from Olympic House came to youth club to talk about the work they do.
Some quotes from our young people about what they heard in the talk:

‘The charity helps 1,000 people a year.’
‘It made me feel happy that they help people so they don’t need to live on the streets or be hungry.’
‘They give people as much time as they need, from three months to a few years until they find permanent accommodation.’
‘They have a strong connection with everyone.’

The young people said that helping the homeless is connected to our faith because as Catholic’s we believe people should be treated fairly, we love like Jesus did, helping people is helping God, Jesus says to love your neighbour and by helping the homeless we are fulfilling what Jesus wants us to do, everyone is a child of God so we should always help others, It is feeding God when we feed each other, love one another as I have loved you, Jesus helped the poor.

The young people raised a total of £975 which was presented at Olympic house on 4th July.

Reflection from the Older Youth Groups Social Justice Project

The Older youth club chose the topic of homelessness as their social justice project. Over six months the young people made posters, spoke at mass, collected donations, created care packages and delivered the packages to the homeless on the streets of central London.

On Wednesday the 22nd of November, myself and 6 others from Sacred Heart Catholic Youth Club travelled into central London and gave care packages to those who were living on the street. The people who went were: Kuba, Chayden, Luca, Bailey, Ollie, Adam and myself.
It was a very humbling moment for me as I was able to fully see what the world can be like and how tough it must be for these people who are living on the street with no money and no family to go to.
When we exited Victoria station, we felt an extremely cold breeze as it when a very wintery night. We were very cold even with warm hoodies, coats, hats, gloves and snoods, so it would be much worse for those who we were giving these packages to as they didn’t have nearly as many warm layers to keep them as warm as we did.
Therefore, this was a very heart-warming moment for all of us who went on this trip and we hope that we have made those who we gave packages to, lives a little bit easier.

Reflections from Summer Camp 2023

In the middle of August some teenagers from our parish went to the summer camp at Alton castle. During the week they were able to meet with other teenagers from diocese across the country, take part in fun activities like abseiling, low ropes, a trip to the zoo and a day at Alton towers as well as a lot of time for prayer and reflection and mass every day. The week camp included talks each day from the awesome Catholic speaker Maggie Craig on the ‘real presence’ of Jesus in the Eucharist.

‘My trip to Kenelm Youth Trust summer camp;
I enjoyed spending time with my friends and making new ones. The activities were very good especially the messy games. I will definitely go back next year and think others should too.’ Patrick

‘I really liked the Alton castle trip because I made new friends and did different activities. Everyday was different. All of the team were really nice and let us go on whatever rides we wanted at Alton Towers! It was the best part of my summer and the team made my experience much better. Thank you!’ Chayden

Our Parish currently has three children’s youth groups which have been running since 2015.

Youth Club is a place to catch up with your friends, make new friends, play games, take part in activities, share a meal, work on social justice projects and fundraising, think about God and pray. We go on trips once a month to places such as: Oxygen trampolining park; ice skating; bowling and many more. We also take an annual trip to Thorpe Park in July and in the past we have been on residential PGL trips, Disney Land and Paris trip and more. To join the year 4-8 Youth Clubs just come along to a session. The cost is £1 each week. We ask that you send a message to say you are attending the year 9-11 club as it includes a hot meal.

We are always looking for helpers with youth club so if you are an adult interested in youth activities or just want to lend a hand in the parish then we would welcome you enthusiastically. The role of adult helpers at youth club is to keep a general eye on the children, cook, help set up and tidy away, attend trips and converse with the youngsters, you can help every week or on a rota basis.
Your appointment as a volunteer would be subject to a DBS check.

If you are over the age of 16 and would like to help at Youth Club then we have a young ambassador scheme in place. We also accept teenagers over the age of 14 volunteering for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
