Pope Benedict XVI RIP

1927 – 2022

We were saddened to hear of the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on Saturday 31st December. He was a humble and courageous servant of the Lord, and one of the great theologians of the last century.

We had a Requiem Mass for Pope Benedict at St John the Evangelist, Mill End on Wednesday 4th January at the 9.30am Mass, and at Our Lady Help of Christians Church on Wednesday 4th January at 7pm, which was also available on the live-stream.

Pope Benedict’s funeral took place on Thursday 5th January at 8.30am at St Peter’s. A small group from our parishes watched this together in Our Lady’s Parish Hall after an early Mass. It was deeply moving to be together as we said farewell to our German shepherd.

Almighty ever-living God,

who in Pope Benedict the sixteenth

have given a living example of Christ,

the Good Shepherd,

to shine throughout the whole world,

grant us, we pray,

that, through his intercession,

we may joyfully pour out an abundance

of Christian charity.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Eternal rest, grant to him O Lord,

And let Perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace. Amen.

May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
