One World Group

OUR LADY’S ONE WORLD GROUP

The group has been part of the parish since 1982. Our activities have included campaigning on Justice and Peace issues. We promote the work of CAFOD (The Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) as well as support a wide range of smaller charities.  We do  this by information displays, collections after Mass for CAFOD and providing coffee and tea after Sunday morning Masses. Currently the group is promoting Cafod’s work linked to climate change and care for the environment. Along with other parishioners, several members of the group joined the Climate change march in 2015 which culminated in the lobbying of our MPs at the House of Commons.

Charities and organisations supported in recent years include:

  • Apostleship of the Sea
  • The local Foodbank
  • Wateraid
  • The House of the Open Door (supporting trafficked women and children)
  • Herts Young Homeless
  • The Living Room (supporting local people coping with a range of addictions)
  • Freedom from Torture
  • Casa Alianza (helping street children in Central America)
  • Medaille Trust 9works for the eradication of human trafficking)
  • Congo hydroelectric project to enable people to become self-supporting in energy production
  • Pax Christi
  • Street Talk
  • Progressio (works with people in developing countries to meet their needs)
  • Diapalante (supporting development in Mauritania and Senegal)
  • EDAID (recycling material, paper tools etc. for schools in Gambia)

Each year the wider parish are invited to a Lenten meditation where speakers lead us on a reflection linked to the aims of the group. In recent years these have included parish personnel and an asylum seeker.
